The name "Spitfire" was born out of Britain's urgent need to counter the growing threat of the modernized German Luftwaffe. In the 1930s, the British Air Ministry (the UK government department responsible for aviation from 1918 to 1964) demanded a new high-speed interceptor. At the time, the Royal Air Force's fastest interceptors could only reach speeds of around 350 km/h, but to effectively counter Germany’s rapidly developing aircraft, a minimum speed of 480 km/h was required. The Spitfire was conceived to meet this critical need.
 

Design & Development

The Supermarine Spitfire was designed by R.J. Mitchell, chief engineer of Supermarine Aviation Works. Development began in 1934 with the prototype "Type 300" (K5054). Mitchell’s goal was to create a high-performance short-range interceptor that could fully exploit the power of the newly developed Rolls-Royce PV-XII V-12 engine (later named the Merlin engine), while remaining relatively easy to fly.

Key innovations of the Type 300 included:
All-metal monocoque fuselage & elliptical wings (for superior aerodynamics)
Retractable landing gear (reducing drag)
Enclosed cockpit & oxygen system (enabling high-altitude combat)
Thin, high-speed wing design (optimized for agility and speed)
