The Boeing Chinook CH-47SD ("Super D"), a core asset of Squadron 127 under the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF), features self-defense-focused armament. 7.62mm general-purpose machine guns or 12.7mm heavy machine guns can be mounted on the windowsills on both sides of the fuselage, operated by dedicated gunners to provide lateral fire cover.
Some variants can also carry 19-round 2.75-inch rocket pods for close-range fire support during transport missions, while a machine gun position at the rear cargo door enhances rear defense. This armament design prioritizes improved survivability during transportation. Boasting impressive core specifications, the helicopter has a length of 30.1 meters, a height of 5.7 meters, an empty weight of 11,148 kg, and a maximum takeoff weight of 24,500 kg. Powered by two Honeywell T55-FA-714A turboshaft engines and equipped with extended-range fuel tanks, it achieves a maximum speed of 315 km/h and doubles the operational range of the CH-47D variant. It can carry 55 fully-armed soldiers or 10 tons of supplies, accommodate 3 armed Humvees in its cargo hold, and lift artillery pieces and engineering equipment via its three under-fuselage cargo hooks. The CH-47SD offers dual value in both military and civilian fields. Militarily, it undertakes core tasks such as troop projection and battlefield resupply, and supports Squadrons 125 and 126 in search and rescue (SAR) operations . In non-military scenarios, it serves as a key asset for international humanitarian aid—having assisted in the Hurricane Katrina disaster relief efforts and been deployed from Australia's Amberley Training Base to fight bushfires in Victoria in 2020. It can also be modified for forest fire suppression and heavy equipment transportation in civilian use. For Singapore's military, the induction of the CH-47SD has addressed its longstanding deficiency in heavy-lift capabilities. As a country with a small land area, the helicopter provides crucial support for Singapore's "overseas defense" strategy, enabling rapid projection of troops and equipment to overseas training bases. Its adaptability to high-temperature and high-altitude environments ensures stable operations in the complex Southeast Asian landscape and overseas deployment areas.
